History and Origins

Cardano was founded in 2015 by American mathematician and entrepreneur Charles Hoskinson, who previously contributed to the creation of Ethereum. After disagreements regarding Ethereum’s future direction (specifically the acceptance of venture capital), he launched his own project.

The name Cardano is inspired by the Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano, and the ADA token is named after Ada Lovelace, considered the first computer programmer in history.

Cardano was officially launched in 2017.

How Does Cardano Work?

Cardano uses its own proof-of-stake protocol, Ouroboros. Validators (stake pool operators) are randomly selected within each slot to add new blocks to the chain.

The network includes three types of nodes:

• Edge nodes: generate cryptocurrency transactions
• mCore nodes: manage ADA staking and verification
• Relay nodes: ensure data transmission between core nodes and the public network

Staking on Cardano is available in two ways:

• Running your own staking pool: requires higher technical knowledge and a larger amount of ADA
• Delegating ADA to an existing pool: a simple path suitable for regular users

For staking, users receive rewards in the form of a share of transaction fees. The blockchain is divided into two layers:

• Cardano Settlement Layer (CSL): records ADA transactions
• Cardano Computation Layer (CCL): manages smart contracts and rules for decentralized applications

The network operates in time units called epochs and slots. Every 20 seconds, a new leader is selected to add the next block to the blockchain.

How Is Cardano Different from Other Blockchains?

Cardano was designed from the beginning as an eco-friendly, secure, and scientifically grounded alternative to traditional blockchains. Unlike Ethereum, which transitioned to proof-of-stake only in 2022, Cardano has used this algorithm from the start.

The network offers lower fees and is optimized for easy smart contract and decentralized application development. Its development follows an academic approach — all major changes to Cardano are backed by formal research studies and a peer-review process.

Cardano’s ecosystem encompasses not only finance but also identity solutions, education, supply chain projects, and digital assets such as NFTs.
