Shiba Inu (SHIB)
Shiba Inu is one of the so-called "meme coins," created primarily for entertainment and often inspired by popular internet memes. It is a community-driven project. Shiba Inu has developed a fairly extensive connected ecosystem — including the decentralized exchange ShibaSwap, where users can provide liquidity, stake tokens, or lock tokens into smart contracts. The Shiba Inu ecosystem consists of three main cryptocurrencies: SHIB, LEASH, and BONE. It also includes Doggy DAO, the Shiba Eternity game, and the Shiboshi NFT incubator. In addition, the project launched its own Layer 2 solution called Shibarium.
The cryptocurrency — technically a token — operates on Ethereum. Its supply is capped at 1 quadrillion tokens. 50% were locked in Uniswap liquidity pools, while the rest were burned or donated to charitable causes.
Use Cases
Shiba Inu is part of the broader ShibaSwap ecosystem, which includes:
- ShibaSwap – a decentralized exchange for trading, staking, and providing liquidity,
- Three primary tokens: SHIB, BONE, and LEASH,
- Doggy DAO – a decentralized autonomous organization for ecosystem governance,
- Shibarium – its own Layer 2 solution launched in August 2023 for cheaper and faster transactions,
- Shiba Eternity – a collectible card game,
- Shiba Inu The Metaverse – a virtual world currently under development.
The SHIB token is mainly used for speculation, community-driven activities, and as a utility token within decentralized applications.
History and Origins
Shiba Inu was launched in 2020 by an anonymous individual under the pseudonym Ryoshi.
After launch, 50% of all SHIB tokens were sent to Vitalik Buterin, who:
- Burned 90% of the SHIB tokens,
- Donated the remaining 10% by selling them and contributing the proceeds to a COVID-19 relief fund in India.
This move made Shiba Inu one of the most notable examples of large-scale crypto philanthropy.
How Does Shiba Inu Work?
Shiba Inu is an ERC-20 token operating on the Ethereum blockchain. The SHIB token supports staking via its own decentralized exchange, ShibaSwap, where users can earn rewards by providing liquidity. A major technological innovation for the ecosystem was the launch of Shibarium in August 2023—a Layer 2 solution designed to enable cheaper and faster transactions compared to Ethereum's mainnet.
The entire project’s direction is guided by the community through Doggy DAO, allowing token holders to vote on key proposals and ecosystem developments.
How Is Shiba Inu Different from Dogecoin?
The main difference between Shiba Inu and Dogecoin lies in their technological foundations and project visions. While Dogecoin operates on its own blockchain with unlimited inflation — with new tokens minted every five minutes — Shiba Inu runs on Ethereum with a fixed maximum token supply. Additionally, Shiba Inu is building a full ecosystem including its own exchange, games, NFT projects, and a metaverse, aiming to become more than just a memecoin. Dogecoin, by contrast, remains primarily a simple community-driven payment token.
