Solana was founded in 2017 by former Qualcomm engineer Anatoly Yakovenko, along with Greg Fitzgerald. The project received backing from major funds such as Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain Capital, and the Czech group Rockaway Capital. Solana’s mainnet launched in 2020. Since then, the network has rapidly evolved, including major updates in 2023 that significantly improved its stability after previous issues with outages. By 2024/2025, Solana became one of the most active blockchain networks by daily transaction count.

How Does Solana Work?

Solana uses a unique combination of proof-of-stake (PoS) and proof-of-history (PoH) consensus algorithms. Proof-of-history enables efficient and time-organized processing of transactions without the need for real-time verification by every node. Currently, the network typically processes around 4,000 to 5,000 transactions per second (TPS), with a maximum capacity of up to 65,000 TPS. Validators stake SOL tokens and are rewarded for correctly validating transactions. A portion of transaction fees is automatically burned to help control token inflation.

Additionally, Solana is expanding its ecosystem with Solana Mobile—a project focused on Web3 smartphones like the Saga Phone, allowing direct interaction with the blockchain without relying on external apps.

How Is Solana Different from Other Cryptocurrencies?

Solana is often referred to as an "Ethereum killer" due to its speed and low fees. Unlike Bitcoin, Solana does not have a fixed supply of tokens; instead, inflation is controlled by regular fee burning. Compared to Ethereum, Solana offers higher throughput and faster transaction processing, though Ethereum maintains stronger decentralization in terms of validator count.
