USD Coin (USDC)

USD Coin, known as USDC, is a stable digital currency pegged at a 1:1 ratio to the US dollar. It was created in 2018 through a collaboration between Circle and the Coinbase exchange. Each USDC token is fully backed by real US dollars or equivalent liquid assets and is subject to regular audits. Thanks to its emphasis on transparency and regulation, USDC is considered one of the most trusted stablecoins in the market.

USDC serves as a secure bridge between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency world. Investors use it to protect value during market volatility, for trading on exchanges, in DeFi applications, or for quick international payments. History and Origins

Circle was founded in 2013 with the aim of connecting traditional finance and blockchain. In 2018, Circle and Coinbase created the CENTRE consortium and launched USDC. The goal was to offer a trusted and regulated stablecoin, fully backed by reserves and accessible to the general public. In 2023, Circle announced the expansion of USDC to new blockchains and an increased focus on reserve transparency to solidify its position as a leader among stablecoins.

How Does USDC Work?

When purchasing USDC, the user sends dollars to Circle, which issues the corresponding number of tokens. When redeeming USDC back for dollars, the appropriate number of tokens is burned. This process ensures that only as many tokens are in circulation as are backed by real reserves.

Since 2023, Circle has transitioned to fully backing USDC primarily with cash and short-term US Treasury bonds to strengthen confidence following the collapse of certain banks (e.g., Silicon Valley Bank).

USDC is available on several blockchains, including Ethereum (ERC-20), Solana, Tron, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Optimism, and others. This ensures high flexibility and compatibility across DeFi and Web3 projects.

How Is USDC Different from Other Stablecoins?

USDC is distinguished by its high level of transparency, regular audits, and strict regulation. Compared to some other stablecoins, such as Tether (USDT), it places a greater emphasis on full reserve backing and openness to regulators. A disadvantage is its higher level of centralization – Circle can freeze addresses associated with illegal activities if necessary.

Is USDC a potential competitor to Bitcoin?

No, as both cryptocurrencies have completely different functions. USDC primarily serves to provide liquidity and bridge the gap between fiat currencies and Bitcoin.

How does USDC protect me from cryptocurrency volatility?

Unlike other cryptocurrencies, USDC is pegged to a fiat currency – specifically the dollar – at a 1:1 rate. The value of USDC should always be equivalent to 1 dollar. It should not rise or fall in value. If the value falls below 1 dollar, it would be a "depeg," which would have a dramatic impact on the trustworthiness of the entire project.
